I didn’t think I could do it.
I wasn’t sure how to do it.
I really wanted to do it.
But I was scared.
Have you ever felt like that? Have you ever wanted to do something but fear held you back. Fear of failing, fear of rejection, fear of looking like a complete and utter nincompoop?
Or perhaps you’ve needed to do something but kept putting it off because getting a root canal with nothing but whale music and an aspirin for anesthetic seemed way more fun?
Me too. On both counts.
However this week I did them both because of something profound I heard someone say.
People we admire, who’ve done great things and are inspiring, haven’t always had it easy. They’ve just stepped ahead scared.
Bam! My mind exploded when I heard that.People we admire, who've done great things and are inspiring, haven't always had it easy. They've just stepped ahead scared. @emilypfreeman Click To Tweet
I can moan and whine until the cows come home. I can grumble about not being where I want to be in life, not being the person I’d like to be, or not having the faith I aspire to, but really I’m just a big fat scaredy cat.
When I’m scared I don’t step forward. I hesitate, procrastinate, dither and stall. I go up to the edge, peek over and say how I’d love to fly, but never step off and then moan I’m not flying where and how I want to.
Then I heard those words and stepped ahead – scared.
In the grand scheme of world peace and ending global hunger, my step was as a drop in the ocean; a nat on the backside of a seeing eye dog. But I did it, and now I’ve taken this small step perhaps I’ll take another.
And my small step was ….. queue drum roll and please, don’t roll your eyes when you find out what it is…..
I’ve committed to doing Facebook Live everyday.
I know, the anticlimax is tangible, but here’s the deal. I wanted to do it, I knew it was what I should be doing (to say God was calling me may be going a bit to far, but you get where I’m going) but I was scared.
I was scared I wouldn’t know what to say, that I’d look a mess on camera and you’d see the wonky smile I was teased about as a kid. I was scared I’d get two old ladies and a door mouse tuning in and even they’d fall asleep. I was scared you’d think me crazy, fame-seeking and fickle.
Then I stepped ahead scared, and guess what? I grew.
Yes, I didn’t know what to say, I definitely looked a hot mess and, if you’ve seen it, you saw my wonky smile, and you may even have fallen asleep.
BUT IT’S OK!
I’ve done a full week now and I feel more confident, not just on FBLive but in myself. I’ve felt the fear, done it anyway and grown.
So friends, let me invite you to do two things.
I’ll be there every weekday at 9am-ish EST. Come and join the fun, comment live and I’ll be able to say Hi and respond, or comment later if you’re in line at Starbucks and can’t see it live (and if you like it enough to share it with friends the good fairy of Neverland will sprinkle magic sparkles on your Cornflakes – I promise).
Here’s the one I did the other day about being braver than you seem (it inspired this post!) MY FACEBOOK LIVE
Secondly, what do you need or want to do, but you’re too scared? What are you facing but find yourself hesitating, procrastinating, dithering and stalling. It might be something pretty frivolous like FBLive, or it could be something important and sensitive like asking someone to forgive you or quitting your job. What would it look like to take a step scared? How might you grow if you did?
Let me encourage you friend – take that step in love and watch yourself grow.
See you next time,
If you’ve stepped ahead scared, share your story in the comments below. I love to hear stories of how we grow through the tough stuff.
P.S. Here’s a bonus to get you stepping out scared.
Nearly all of us fear rejection the most. Fear of failure, looking stupid, being hurt, not being good enough etc, are all forms of fear under different pseudonyms. The antidote to fear is always love; unconditional love. When we know we are loved fully, just as we are and will never be rejected, we are free to step out scared.
If you want to know how ridiculously and unconditionally loved you are you can download the AUDIO Love Letter from God. It’s a calming, soul nurturing letter from God, to you, written entirely in bible verses.
Just CLICK HERE to download it – it’s my gift to you
and if you want to send it to a friend, just send them this link http://eepurl.com/csG3m1
